Examining the impact of single-use plastic bans on behavior to develop effective management strategies
reducing pollution and plastic waste globally
The Challenge

In recent years, the UN Environment Program has emphasized the need for a transition to a green economy with low carbon emissions, resource efficiency, and social inclusiveness. The pathway to achieving this green economy involves both private and public sectors developing policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and pollution, and investing in infrastructure and asset development to boost economic activities, conserve biodiversity, and improve ecosystem services globally. According to a UNDP report, “Climate Change Adaptation in Africa,” in 2018, Africa is at the tipping point of the impact of climate change.

The Work

The AFRICER project, initiated by Eco Amet Solutions and a team of independent researchers with expertise in different aspects of environmental sustainability, aimed to address some of these challenges. This research project was particularly focused on evaluating the effects of Rwanda’s single-use plastic ban on public attitudes and behaviors. Additionally, it sought to develop a template for the development and implementation of single-use plastics policies and effective management strategies within the African context.
